How to Select the Right Coach

Because coaching is highly individualized and collaborative by nature, finding the right coach is very important. According to a 2008 study by the American Management Association, the two critical elements in selecting a coach are chemistry and expertise.i

Chemistry is crucial because coaching success involves a partnership built on a strong foundation of trust. Your coach must be someone you feel comfortable working with and confiding in.

Expertise is also key. Although each situation is unique, it is important that your coach exhibit a good understanding of your situation and desired changes so that they can ask pertinent questions, share meaningful observations, and suggest relevant frameworks for change.

What new possibilities can you find by looking
at the world from different points of view?

Coaching was created to help adults flourish, living with success and meaning in our fast paced world of change. It is a flexible approach to moving forward built upon a foundation of trust, respect and a commitment to work together.

My proven approach to coaching involves the following major steps:

  • 1. Identifying your results or desired end state and willingness for change

  • 2. Discussing your current context  and implications of moving into the desired situation

  • 3. Determining potential pitfalls, opportunities for support, and ways to shift habits

  • 4. Creating action plans where you are accountable for achieving your goals

  • 5. Developing long range plans to uphold change, follow up, and assess overall effectiveness

At the very core of the coaching process is adult learning. Coaching objectives uncover needs for new skills or behaviors or relationships or expectations. The very act of learning, although sometimes daunting at first, is amazingly invigorating and inspiring in the long run. As you move forward in the near term, bringing your vision into reality, your future capacity to change will strengthen and evolve.
